About the Department
The Department of Social Work at Arunachal Pradesh University, Pasighat, was established as one of the five pioneering departments of the university on July 1, 2022, with the formal approval during the University’s 1st Executive Council Meeting on May 23, 2023. This marked the beginning of an academic journey dedicated to fostering social change, development, and empowerment within the region. On August 23, 2023, the first postgraduate cohort of 20 students embarked on their academic path, under the auspices of the Hon’ble Governor of Arunachal Pradesh, Lt. Gen. Kaiwalya Trivikram Parnaik, PVSM, UYSM, YSM, whose visit highlighted the significance of this new chapter for the university and the state.
Social work is a practice-based profession and academic discipline rooted in principles of social justice, human rights, and respect for diversity. It strives to empower individuals, families, and communities, helping them navigate and overcome societal challenges. With a focus on promoting social cohesion, advocating for vulnerable populations, and supporting sustainable development, social workers play an essential role in transforming lives and communities.
In alignment with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, the Department of Social Work embraces an interdisciplinary, holistic approach to education, placing significant emphasis on experiential learning. The curriculum is designed to ensure that students not only gain theoretical knowledge but also develop practical skills through real-world interactions, internships, and community-based projects. This experiential learning model empowers students to directly engage with communities, building their capacity to address local and global challenges. In the context of Arunachal Pradesh, a state characterized by its cultural diversity and unique socio-economic landscape, students are encouraged to work on solutions that are locally relevant, fostering a deeper understanding of the specific needs of different groups within the region.
The department remains committed to developing compassionate, skilled, and socially responsible professionals who are equipped to advocate for and create lasting change. Through this dynamic educational approach, the Department of Social Work at Arunachal Pradesh University aspires to prepare students to become effective leaders in the social work field, with a deep commitment to enhancing the well-being of individuals and communities in Arunachal Pradesh and beyond.
Vision
Develop competent and passionate social work professionals dedicated to promoting social justice, advancing social well-being and meeting the needs of diverse communities.
Mission
Provide an interdisciplinary education that combines theory and practice, equipping social work trainees with the skills, values, and commitment to address social issues, advocate for vulnerable communities, and promote equity, inclusion, and sustainable development in a changing world.
