The Department of Tribal Studies was established on July 1, 2022, with the establishment of Arunachal Pradesh University, Pasighat. However, the Department became functional only after the approval of the University in its 1st Executive Council Meeting held on 23rd May 2023. The formal postgraduate classes started on 22nd August 2023 with 20 students.
Keeping in mind the rich and diverse culture and experiences of tribal communities and indigenous people around the world and Arunachal Pradesh in particular, the Department of Tribal Studies was started with the vision to cultivate a deep understanding and insights into the tribal lifeworld, their knowledge system, heritage, changes, relation with the state and contemporary challenges.

This interdisciplinary department focuses on the academic excellence and exploration of indigenous and tribal communities, drawing on the ideas and methods from anthropology, sociology, literature, environmental studies, history, political science, cultural studies, health sciences, and other disciplines. Tribal studies, in conjunction with tribal communities and their social and political history, engage with these disciplines in a critical dialogue.

The department offers courses covering indigenous knowledge systems, tribal languages and literature, indigenous rights, natural resource management, traditional governance structures, cultural heritage preservation, and other topics relevant to tribal studies. The department aims to produce graduates with the knowledge and abilities to contribute to the well-being and development of tribal communities with a deep understanding of indigenous cultures, their social dynamics, and the issues affecting them.

Apart from teachings, the department collaborates with indigenous communities, scholars, and organizations to conduct research, raise awareness, and advocate for the rights and well-being of indigenous peoples. This involves fieldwork, community-based projects and engagements, and partnerships with indigenous leaders and institutions.

The vision of the department is to become a leading hub for academic excellence and research in Tribal Studies, fostering a profound understanding of indigenous cultures and contributing to the preservation and empowerment of tribal communities.

Driven by a passion for knowledge and social responsibility, our mission encompasses rigorous research, the preservation of indigenous wisdom, community empowerment, and the cultivation of a new generation of scholars dedicated to tribal well-being.
