Anti-Tobacco Policy

POLICY STATEMENT

Scope and Purpose: The Tobacco-Free Policy at Arunachal Pradesh University, Pasighat, aims to create a healthy and safe environment by eliminating

the use of tobacco products on university premises. This policy applies to all students, faculty, staff, contractors, and visitors. The purpose is to promote wellness, reduce health risks associated with tobacco use, and support a tobacco-free lifestyle for the entire university community.

anti-tobaccoPrinciples: The principles guiding this policy are centred on health and safety, respect, and compliance. Health and safety are paramount, as the university strives to reduce exposure to second-hand smoke and prevent tobacco-related illnesses among its community members. Respect is crucial, fostering an environment where everyone adheres to the tobacco-free policy and supports those who wish to quit using tobacco. Compliance with national and state regulations regarding tobacco control ensures that our policies are up-to-date and enforceable, maintaining the university’s commitment to a healthy campus.

Definition of Premises: The university premises include all indoor and outdoor areas within the campus boundaries. This encompasses classrooms, offices, hallways, restrooms, dining areas, recreational facilities, walkways, green spaces, parking lots, and university-owned vehicles. By defining the premises clearly, the policy ensures that all areas are covered and everyone is aware of where the tobacco-free rules apply.

Benefits: The benefits of a tobacco-free campus are numerous. Firstly, there is a significant improvement in health by reducing exposure to second-hand smoke, which decreases the risk of respiratory issues, heart disease, and other tobacco-related illnesses. Secondly, a tobacco-free environment contributes to a cleaner and more aesthetically pleasing campus, with less litter from cigarette butts and other tobacco products. Additionally, the university’s commitment to a healthy, sustainable campus enhances its reputation as a progressive and responsible institution, attracting more students and staff who value a healthy environment.

Responsibilities: All members of the university community, including students, faculty, and staff, are responsible for adhering to the tobacco-free policy and encouraging others to comply. This collective effort ensures the policy’s success. The university administration is responsible for implementing and monitoring the policy, providing resources for tobacco cessation, and ensuring clear communication of the policy to all stakeholders. Security personnel play a vital

role in enforcing the policy and addressing any violations in accordance with university regulations, ensuring the policy is upheld.

Support System: To support individuals who wish to quit using tobacco, the university offers access to counseling and smoking cessation programs. Educational resources provide information on the risks associated with tobacco use and the benefits of quitting, helping individuals make informed decisions. Additionally, the university encourages the formation of peer support networks, where individuals can receive encouragement and assistance from their peers in their efforts to quit tobacco, creating a supportive community. The university will also collaborate with the District Tobacco Control Office to access additional resources, professional counseling, and support for organizing cessation programs and training sessions.

Penalty: Students found in violation of the tobacco-free policy may face disciplinary actions, which can range from warnings to fines or other measures as outlined in the university’s code of conduct. Faculty and staff who violate the policy may receive warnings, fines, or other disciplinary measures in accordance with university employment policies. Visitors who do not comply with the tobacco-free policy may be asked to leave the university premises, ensuring that everyone on campus adheres to the policy.

Pledge: All members of the university community are encouraged to take a pledge to support and adhere to the tobacco-free policy. By signing the pledge, individuals commit to fostering a healthy and supportive environment for all, demonstrating their dedication to a tobacco-free campus.
