This interdisciplinary department focuses on the academic excellence and exploration of indigenous and tribal communities, drawing on the ideas and methods from anthropology, sociology, literature, environmental studies, history, political science, cultural studies, health sciences, and other disciplines. Tribal studies, in conjunction with tribal communities and their social and political history, engage with these disciplines in a critical dialogue.

Apart from teachings, the department collaborates with indigenous communities, scholars, and organizations to conduct research, raise awareness, and advocate for the rights and well-being of indigenous peoples. This involves fieldwork, community-based projects and engagements, and partnerships with indigenous leaders and institutions.
